Message from the Artistic Director – Fall 2016

Greetings everyone,

I am very pleased to be returning as artistic director of Vocal Latitudes for its 12th year and I am very excited about the upcoming season.

Of course, we will be singing some great repertoire at our December and May concerts. As in the past, variety is the key word as we will be singing music from many traditions and in different languages. Jazz, gospel, renaissance, pop, folk and African music will all be part of the mix. I attended Podium, the national choral conference, in Edmonton in May and got some great ideas for new repertoire.

We will also sing some original songs and unpublished arrangements (by me and others) that are unique to our choir.

There are some very exciting collaborations planned with different artists planned, both local and from out of town:

  • In March, we are bringing choir conductor, composer and arranger Brian Tate back to Calgary for a weekend workshop. We have sung several of Brian’s wonderful arrangements and compositions and this will be a fantastic opportunity to work with a world renowned choir director.
  • And in May, Vocal Latitudes will be performing with singer-songwriter Coco Love Alcorn as part of the Fish Creek Concert series.
  • We will also be performing in the community (seniors’ residences etc), we will have a vocal technique workshop early in the fall term and we will have a Choir 101 session for newcomers in September.

So, tell your friends, if you know anyone who has ever wanted to join or rejoin a fun choir, this is the year to join Vocal Latitudes. We are accepting singers in all sections. You can also remind them that Vocal Latitudes remains pretty much the most affordable organized choir in Calgary.

I can’t wait to get started.
