2025 Winter & Spring Session

A Powerful Musical Experience with Ndunge Sefu – February 8 & 9

As part of World Interfaith Harmony Week, Vocal Latitudes had the incredible opportunity to welcome Ndunge Sefu, a visiting musical director from the Democratic Republic of Congo, for a special workshop on February 8. From the moment he stepped into the room, his passion for music and connection was contagious.

Together, we learned Shosholoza, a traditional Zulu chant once sung by Black South African labourers under apartheid. Though the lyrics describe a train, the song carries a much deeper meaning—one of struggle, unity, and perseverance. As we sang, we felt the power of voices coming together, much like those workers who found strength in each other through song. No wonder Shosholoza is often called South Africa’s second national anthem—it speaks to resilience and hope.

The energy carried into February 9, when Ndunge Sefu led Vocal Latitudes and singers from other choirs in a moving performance of Thula Sizwe, another South African song of unity and strength. In that moment, it wasn’t just about the music—it was about people, history, and the way song can bring us closer together. It was an unforgettable experience, reminding us why we sing—not just for sound, but for connection.

The New Age of Choral Music

Join Vocal Latitudes as we journey into 2025 and beyond! The New Age of Choral Music is our program theme beginning in January. We are excited to present this celebration of living composers and arrangers at the forefront of the choral revolutionary wave. The set list is full of beautiful, captivating music in a variety of styles and genres, representing a New Age of voices singing together.

Vocal Latitudes is a non-auditioned World Music choir; all of our programs have a global component to them, and we rehearse in a fun and casual atmosphere while still being productive. Music-reading skills are not required to join, and we welcome all who are pumped about singing in a group.

Our main concert is on Saturday, May 10th, 7pm at Parkdale United Church. We aim to schedule at least one supplementary concert per semester as well, details to be confirmed. Vocal Latitudes is directed by Krishan Power, with pianist Faye White. We rehearse Tuesday evenings, 7:15-9:15pm at Calgary Unitarians (1703 1st St. NW). All are welcome to join us for our try-out rehearsals on Jan. 14th and 21st.
